Here’s a very positive review on an S2K site:
https://www.s2ki.com/forums/jdm-tuning-148/spoon-rigid-collars-installed-tested-stock-ap2-1036470/

If true (for the ND) this could be an awesome mod!

Reading the description in the Youtube video, it would be far more effective if we waited a few years. Our chassis is probably too new.

Spoon Rigid Collars:

I started a thread (https://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?p=8950741#post8950741) on the subject, since I talk at ridiculous length given the opportunity. I literally crashed the survey website that Mazda sent me, presumably because my feedback was too damn much.

The Spoon stuff works fantastic, costs moderate money, super tricky to install right. But, as I said before, it lets out the unicorns.

Not the most responsible thing, but I've been hitting the century mark the last three days going to work. A portion of my commute has very long straight with no side streets, driveways or other man-made hazards (rural area). Elk/deer primary threat. Also have the ability see waaaay far ahead and hardly no traffic at such an early hour (daylight though). When I round the curve entering this straight if I don't see any vehicles (the ENTIRE length) I step on it until hitting 100mph then hit the brakes to the posted speed limit of 60mph and go about my daily commute and abide by the law. The speed, plus the fear of getting busted, sure gets the blood flowing and mind off trivial stuff like "the news" :D
I state again, if I see any vehicles before (or during) this event the game is off.

The product turned out great, glad he revised it to actually visibly sequence. Does the gif speed it up a bit? I'd like it just a bit slower. I have a short list of mods in my room to install before I can sanely order this one! Wind restrictor, BBFW rollbar, etc

It will blink as fast as yours do now. We can’t change the blink speed yet. I say yet because you’d need to reprogram the BCM to do it, but I think Sergey is working on that too.

I'm sure the steering wheel feels fabulous. I've considered Guardian Designs wheel but, in several different photos, it's always looked to me that they didn't get the ring at the top in the exact right spot. Or, is it just the angle of your photo? The ring at the top off seems off-center a little bit and also slightly crooked (not perfectly vertical).

Also, why doesn't the red stitching on the shift boot go all the way up to the top of the boot? Is that something you requested?

Mark

Probably lens distortion making it look off center. You of all people should be aware of that Mark!

Looks like the inner third of the light activates before the sequential? Is it just the photography that lets the yellow light bleed outside the actual inner lens area?

I installed a Raceseng custom shift knob a couple of weeks ago. It is nice, bigger than the stock knob. I suppose that I should get a decent picture of it.

Thanks. I totally agree with you on first name :)
I am still contemplating about PPF. I read about some negative comments on longevity of PPFs. Yellowing of PPF after 5 - 10 years. I plan to keep this car for 10+ years so don’t want to deal with discolored PPF and removal. But those rock chips will bug me greatly. Two of my other cars have PPF and other two don’t have PPF. I don’t plan to keep them for more than 5 years so I am not too worried. Anyways, I am not really sure. Ugggg..

Mark Booth

22nd May 2018, 04:15

PPF has come a long way. The days of yellowing PPF are long gone. If this was 2010, I wouldn’t get PPF either. It’s not 2010.

There is no difference in the front bumper of any of them, so I don't know what you should do. No body panel except the trunk lid every changes between trims.

22nd May 2018, 19:08

If you can afford PPF I'd do it. My car has some small chips at 25k miles, not terrible but I'd prefer if they weren't there. My thought is eventually I can just have the car wrapped.

Fixed my airbag warning light, when I put the resistor in during my seat install it just wasn't in there good I guess. Yay, no more blinking light and my other airbags work again!

Baby got new shoes on Monday in preparation for a long trip beginning tomorrow: Continental ECS in the stock size.

They replaced my worn Michelin Pilot SuperSports (down to 4/32 @ 19k miles).
About 150 miles in my initial impression is that their handling characteristics are similar to the Pilots.
Lots of twisties over the Memorial Day weekend will tell the full tale.

Nope, you’re right. It’s my brain. For some reason, I always read “km” as “thousand miles”. So I was thinking 12 thousand miles which is about 50% of their life depending on driving style.

Stickers are easy - heat gun or hair drier, plastic scraper, and Goo Gone.

In my case, the column cover was also easy. The left side needed to be lower.
Remove the two philips screws under the column cover, and pull the bottom half down and aft. Note the holes for the screws. I placed a spacer over the left hole and reassembled. The spacer allowed the lower cover to be rotated level, and the upper cover attaches to the lower cover, so it gets leveled.

Neither. I'd chalk it up to driver going to fast for the road conditions. First time it's not your fault..conditions could have worsened before you could react. Second time through "a lot" is absolutely driver's fault.

No more than 15 mins. Just spray your microfiber towel, wipe the panel and buff after it flashes. Couldn't have been easier. I used maybe 1/4 of the can? Definitely goes a long way. Works great on the wheels too!

I told a fib and actually did this yesterday:p

But here are some more photos from today with some more sunlight!

I’m pretty sure it was a 3M wrap - i’ll try to get the details and list them here. Plans are already afoot for v2.0 due later this year. You guys might even tempt me to run it “stripeless” for a while.

Ok, I was wrong, that dark green colour is apparently an Avery Denison wrap called, ahem, Dark Green. Obvious really.

Mine is spending a couple days (at least) at the dealership. Took it in yesterday because of a vibration sound right where the ST meets the top part of the window. It wasn’t a loud sound and was only noticeable on highway speeds, but it just becomes annoying after a while. Dealership tested and confirmed the issue, so they’re contacting Mazda for resolution. Only about 8 months of warranty left. Need to take care of any quirks quick!!!

Bright side... dealership put me in a 6 as a loaner. Hadn’t had the chance to test drive one of those until now.

From Amazon.com - search 'itimo universal auto gearstick shifter'. 5sp pattern but embossing is so faint you can't see it anyway. I appreciate it's not to everyone's taste but I prefer the feel of this knob :O. Will keep original shifter for when I sell the car. You are running too little damping. Turn it towards the stiffer settings until it no longer does this.

If you are going to do that RF badge I'd pull the Skyactiv and put it there. Would look a lot better.

#ScarletMiata

30th May 2018, 00:50

Yes, you're right, a quick adjustment on damping settings totally changed the car. I placed damping at 5 clicks from full soft in the front, and 1 click from full soft at the back. Car now rides just a bit stiffer than stock. Apparently my damping when the coils were installed was set at nearly full stiff which explains the jackhammer ride.

I think I could have actually gotten a model shorter than the 56" and had them just clear on the stock suspension. However, I was hoping (and it seems the case) that even with a modest drop with these I could still clear and have them be sufficient for oil changes, etc. without a jack.

Glad it helps! If you want to double check, they have a calculator you can use on their website. You hold a yardstick under the inside edge of the front tire and against the bottom of front lip. Distance to the ground at 36" calculates what ramps fit your car, but these should be more than fine.

Just to add more confirmation, I have a set of 56" 2-piece Race Ramps that work great with my lowered car (GWR Progress springs on Club Bilstein shocks).

They're actually even more useful now that my car is lowered versus stock, since I can no longer get my jack under the front of the car when it's on the ground (despite being a low-profile, long reach model). So if I need to take the front wheels off, I can drive up on the ramps and then easily get the jack under to lift a bit more to place jack stands and pop off the wheels.

For things like oil changes that don't require taking the wheels off, the ramps by themselves make it really easy.

Thanks for the confirmation. Will order a pair soon. Prefer these over jacking up the car plus less wear on the knees and arm ;) I like to take my time when tinkering with the car and am usually exhausted at the end. Needless to say the Rhino Ramps no longer work after suspension drop.

Why would you put stickers on fake wheels? I understand buying fakes if you can’t afford the genuine but why try to sell them as real? That is rice and really disappointing.

Installed CS jam handles / door bushings.

Did you have a door rattle issue, and if so, did the CS bushings fix it? A mini-review from you would be nice, because owners’ reviews of these are rare and vague.

Steve, I just installed the red CS bushings a few weeks ago. I was skeptical and didn't think it would be a big deal. I didn't have any rattles with the stock bushings that I could tell. I was sort of shocked at how much of a change the new ones make. With windows down, much less noise and movement closing the doors. Windows up sounds like closing a bank vault door (solid). The biggest change I noticed was the difference while driving over the same route I've driven many times to work. Less flex and fewer noises from anything. I think it was $60.00 well spent.

Fake wheels and fake stickers. It sucks that people have created a market for that. The only reason why the stickers even existed at all was to let the genuine wheels stand out. Now rays etches their logos.

And you haven’t had to repeatedly close/slam doors?

I have them installed also and they really do work to give the vehicle a more solid feeling.

The CravenSpeed Bushings have a reputation for fitting perfectly right out of the box. No need for shaving material or constantly slamming of the doors to force fit.

Of course, I have done other things to tighten up my vehicle including a shock tower brace and anti-sways, front and rear. Every little bit helps.

The most solid car I have ever owned was a brand new 1976 Pontiac, Transam. My ND now is pretty close to being an equal to it.

Honestly? Because I like the way it looks and I'm not willing to spend the money on Volks at this particular moment in time.

I achieved the look I wanted for like 600 bucks (for all 4 w/ stickers) rather than 3k. If you wanna shame me for that, go ahead. I don't need real racing wheels like Volks. I'd be purchasing wayyyy more wheel than I actually needed or even wanted. I don't track my car. I just want a nice looking daily. These exceed my expectations in that regard.

I don't try to sell them as Ray's btw. I tell people straight up they are replica te37's. If they ask why (most who know about Rays stuff, don't because they already know the reason), I just say I'm not willing to spend 700+ replacing a single wheel if I happen to damage one, one day.

Funny you should ask.

About a year ago, I actually spent quite a bit of time figuring out how many vehicles I have owned since I got my license at age 16. That would be 50 years ago.

There were a total of 46 vehicles. Most were used and 23 were brand new. Five of them, including the ND, were convertibles. My most solid convertible was a 2007 Chrysler Sebring. It was very heavy due to a tremendous amount of internal bracing and was designed by Mercedes Benz. It had no cowl shake and was totally stock.

Here is the list. I may have forgotten one or 2 but this is close enough for Government work.

Put the Volk Racing Wheel / Rays Engineering stickers on my fake te37's.

Bought Bilstein shocks to swap out the stock ones my sport (100 bucks from a buddy, woot)

Also picked up the corksport front sway bar.

Got the clips in for my side skirt (which had the clip closest to the driver's side front wheel snap), then I realized that one of the parts that holds the clips (not the clip itself) is what's damaged.

I'll take a it to the dealership next Saturday and have them sort it out I guess.

Installed perforated Wheelskin. Took me 5 hours after a couple of redos (really need to take your time and can't miss a single hole and allow up to 5 hours for the installation). Good quality. Wheel feels thicker. Not much to look at. In hindsight, a Guardian wheel would've been better in terms of time spent, design, and quality.

Installed OEM scuff plates. Liking the look so far.

Put a Corksport axle back muffler on the car yesterday just to see what it sounded like. I didn't much like it on the RF I removed it from and it was totally dysfunctional when the turbo went into boost on my car. All exhaust type sound disappeared and it sounded like cars of the 70s when floored, just the sound of massive amounts of compressed air being blown a tube, no combustion sound at all.

Today I put the Roadstersport Race single pipe with Helmholtz resonator back on and now it sounds like a sports car again.

Also changed the oil, cleaned the back side of the wheels and adjusted the hand brake. Did a little detailing under the hood as well.

I see coilovers for the ND ranging from $1200 to $3500...does brand really matter? What is there to look for when comparing? For me, two things.

Adjustability. I'm a motorcyclist at heart. Tuning the suspension for the conditions of the adventure is so rewarding. I'm one of the minority, I suppose, but I do tweak the preload and dampening if it's available.

Second, reputation. Ohlin has the same reputation as a fine Swiss watch, amongst the crowd I've hung with for decades.

For less money, about half, I'd consider the Koni package. Although they're a brand from my past, I've discovered they're still alive and well with the Miata guys. I don't think they are a true Coilover, but I'm betting they sort an OEM MX-5 just fine. And they do offer some damping adjustment.

5’11” and I wish the exact opposite too.

If you are correctly seated relative to the steering wheel, you should able to (without “reaching” forward and moving your shoulders away from contact with the seat back) rest your wrists on top (at 12 o’clock) of the steering wheel. If you can’t reach that then you are too far away from the wheel.

Got that same rule from every track day instructor I’ve had.

The MeisterRs seem to be the best bang for the buck for sure.

+ one to Meister R but also Fortune Auto is in the same quality range plus they're customizable with Swift or Hyperco Springs and custom spring rates.

For me yes, and when I'm wearing a helmet my head is a fraction of a inch from the A pillar.

It's been almost a year ago that I did a little customization to my clutch and dead pedal.

I have short legs (27" inseam) and as a result, in order for me to push the clutch fully in, I have to run the seat forward, which puts the steering wheel to close to me for comfort.

I made a couple of spacer blocks, 2" thick. One was the shape of the clutch pedal and the other, the shape of the dead pedal.

After attaching them, I found that I was able to push the seat to its most rearward position. I also did a little modification to the driver's seat.

Because the forward part of the seat cushion cuts me in the back of my thighs, I modified the seat so that it tilts up more in the rear which relieves the pressure in the front.

I used longer, hardened bolts with spacers where the back of the seat is attached to the sliders. It raised the back enough to be very comfortable for me. You may not need to do this last step.

Speed limit signs need to be obeyed here....but advisory signs are a suggestion. A guide. My general rule is to double them.

Self installed the aero kit side extensions or whatever you call them... Covers the nice paint gashes I got on the rocker panel from previous autocrosses... Not bad for $260+tax... Beats getting the rocker panel resprayed.

Beautiful job! I wish I could do the reverse--I have a 37" inseam so I'd like to shorten my pedals. I actually went shopping for some shoes and took calipers so I could get the thinnest shoes I could find (it almost feels like I'm wearing rubber socks when I walk around with them); that helped a lot. I often find myself checking "one last time" if the seat is all the way back.

Sort of scary drilling into the the side of your car.

that wasn't the part the concerned me. that was easy. The two things that concerned me was...

On the driver side, I got the spacing of the jacknut wrong. It was fun taking my dremel to my new side extension to make the mounting holes on the bottom longer.

On the passenger side, Part of the rocker panel bottom cracked and broke off from an autox, at exactly the location where a jacknut is suppose to be installed. So it was fun relocating that and drilling another hole into the extension

1953 Mercury 2 door hard top manual w/over drive

How many vehicles have you owned? It must be quite a few since you feel you are up to the task of challenging my original statement regarding my 76 TransAm. :)Calling shenanigans. There was no 2007 Sebring Convertible. There was an 06 on the old platform and an 08 on the sane platform as the hard top 07-10. Also, it was not "developed by Mercedes Benz." It used a platform that was codeveloped by Mitsubishi and DaimlerChrysler while Chrysler was owned by Daimler-Benz. It was also one of the worst cars ever. Like every other Chrysler product.

Thanks for correcting my records. After owning so many cars and not having pictures of all of them, it is difficult to remember some of the stats. I have hard snap shots of some of them taken before digital cameras but many of the paper photos have either gotten lost or are faded so badly that they can hardly be viewed.

My pictures of the Sebring are still on Photo Bucket but I am not able to share those any longer due to their change of policy last year. I wish I could figure out how to retrieve them.

You are right, my Sebring was an 08. It had the 4 cylinder engine so was a real dog. Getting on freeways if the ramps were up hill was very dangerous. The car was way too heavy for that small of an engine. But it was a very pretty car. The 6 banger for that same year was light years ahead in power.

It was the rag top as opposed to the retractable hard top.

I added a few chrome goodies to it to make it look better but it was never a very comfortable car.

The only reason I bought it was because my wife really loved it. She drove it far more than I did.

Ah, maybe he meant “rotated” like he took some off the shelf and installed them. I do that with my stock set every now and then.

I like the 57Transcends over the ZE40. But I’m a sucker for concave on these cars.
