Things to do in the northeast this Canada Day weekend (2024)

To mark Canada's 157th birthday, events are being held around the country. Here is a look at some of the events happening in northeastern Ontario.

In honour of Canada Day, Ontario is offering free fishing June 29 to July 7.

"If you are fishing for free during this period, you must follow conservation licence catch limits and carry identification issued by the provincial or federal government, showing your name and date of birth," the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry said in a news release.

Greater Sudbury

Thursday and Friday night at the Yes Theatre Refettorio on Durham Street, there are two showings of Here Comes the Sun: The Music of the Beatles.

A three-day Canada Day celebration at Bell Parkstarts Saturday with music, movies, family zone, food and vendors.

The event is open 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. each day and will culminate with a drone light show at Science North at 9:45 p.m. Monday instead of fireworks this year.

"It's a modern, eco-friendly alternative that reduces air and noise pollution and ensures the show continues, even with fire bans," the science centre said.

Live music will play each day from 12 to 7 p.m. and free movies are being shown each night at dusk at Grace Hartman Amphitheatre.

On Saturday, Barbie is playing, on Sunday, 21 Jump Street and on Monday, Grown Ups.

Former CTV Northern Ontario journalist Claude Sharma is hosting this year's multicultural Canada Day celebration at Sudbury Arena on Monday.

The free annual celebration hosted by the City of Greater Sudbury and Sudbury Multicultural and Folk Arts Association features entertainment and food.

Free, live entertainment will also be happening outside Science North during the day on Canada Day along with family-favourite inflatables, food and craft vendors.

The Lockerby Legion on Long Lake Road is hosting an open house with a dance and barbecue July 1 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Manitoulin Island

A four-day celebration of culture, food and music is happening in Mindemoya with the Manitoulin Ribfest June 28 to July 1 at the baseball fields.

Kids events include an ice cream eating competition, magic show and soap box derby.

North Bay

Canada Day celebrations are taking place at the waterfront in North Bay from 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. with live music, kid zone, a 5 km road race and regatta.

Sault Ste. Marie

Poutine Feast is happening at the Downtown Plaza June 28 - 30 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Canada Day 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

"The City of Sault Ste. Marie and the Downtown Association welcome you to Canada’s largest touring poutine festival this Canada Day weekend. The City’s most mouthwatering culinary event, Poutine Feast, makes its return to its new location at the Downtown Plaza," the city said in a news release.

"Visitors can enjoy live music performances by talented local artists, visit the Soo MRKT, and outdoor vendors, and participate in fun activities for the whole family."

On Saturday, a free event celebrating Latino culture is being held at the Moose Lodge.

Dog agility trials sanctioned by Agility Association of Canada are taking place at Sault Ste. Marie KOA Holiday on June 29 and 30.

Canada Day opening ceremonies begin at 2 p.m. at the Roberta Bondar Park Tent Pavillion. Live entertainment and attractions will follow throughout the day with a fireworks display at dusk.

Timmins

In Timmins, Canada Day celebrations with cake and cupcakes at Gillies Lake start at 7 p.m. with a DJ and the drone light show begins at 10 p.m. after dark.
