THE COURIER SATURDAY, MARCH 13, 1976 'Parenthood' agency seeks new members By WANDA NICHOLS Courier-Journal Staff Writer People donating to the Louisville chapter of Planned Parenthood no longer hear from the agency only when the coffers are empty; they'll have a voice in services provided at the center. planning, always just sent out envelopes (for donations) and said, 'See you next this year's campaign chairman, Mike Harreld, said in an interview yesterday. "We'll begin meeting with the givers when we're not raising funds, using them more as resources (who) make suggestions about where we should go." For the first time in its 43-year history, Harreld the local chapter is beginning a membership drive. The center is seeking to raise $55,000 in this year's campaign $10,000 more than was raised last year. And Harreld said there a are several new services the agency would like to provide.

before any plans are made, he said, members will be consulted about their views on the need for new programs and about how existing ones expanded. Among the services that Planned Parenthood provides now are birth-control pills and other contraceptive devices, counseling for pregnant women, information about planning a family, and educational meetings about birth control and family planning. Bob Esters, an official with the agency, said the center plans to study the feasibility of providing counseling marital sex relations and making sterilization operations available. Starting these services will depend on an assessment of the need for them, Esters said. The center is open 5 days a week and has the part-time services of about 10 physicians who determine whether a woman is pregnant and make routine examinations.

Ms. Mary Ann Rickert, executive director of the local chapter, said the clinic served "over 4000 active patients" last year and recorded more than 10,000 visits to the clinic. During a luncheon meeting at Kunz's the Dutchman Restaurant yesterday, the president of the national Planned 0 Parenthood organization told the local group that workers in the center must continue to make an effort to reach those people who need services most an estimated 25,000 poor women in Jefferson Jack Hood Vaughn, of the Planned Parenthood Federation-World Population in New York, said, "It's one thing if a middle-class woman has an unwanted child or an unwanted pregnancy, but when a poor woman does it's a little more catastrophic." A poor person is faced with the loss of her job, which could lead to her inability to stay on a good diet during pregnancy or to properly feed a child, is more likely to engage in child abuse, or is faced with having to quit school, Vaughn said. He urged campaign workers, volunteers, staff members and board directors of the local chapter not to become "tranquilized" by any "plateau" that has been reached, but to seek new ways of reaching more clients.
