Lynda La Plante Biography:

Lynda was born on March 15, 1946 in the United Kingdom. She was raised in Liverpool and trained at the Royal-Academy of Dramatic Art. She is also well-known as Lynda Marchal, which was her stage name when she performed with the Royal-Shakespeare Company in several productions. Lynda also appeared in television shows such as Bergerac, The Professional and The Sweeney. The most intriguing thing about Lynda, however, is her knack for many different talents.

She dipped in and out of screenwriting and acting, best known for her magnificent work on the Prime Suspect televisions series. Lynda has a strong focus on crime and thriller, as she discovered when she wrote her first series for Thames Television, Widows, in 1983. After this turning point in her life, Lynda signed her first book-deal with Pan MacMillan, who helped her publish her very first novel, The Legacy, in 1987.

Her first book went over extremely well, and other famous novels came to follow. One of her best known stories is The Talisman, published in 1987, closely followed by Bella Mafia in 1990. Soon afterward, she began work on Prime Suspect, which starred Helen Mirren. This opened the door for La Plante to win an Edgar-Award from the Mystery-Writers of America for her impressive work on the show.

Later, she wrote a movie titled Seekers, which starred Jossete Simon and Brenda Fricker. La Plante, now 68, owns La Plante Productions, which is her very own television-production-company. Under this name, she wrote high-rating series Supply and Demand, The Governor, and Killer Net; as well as Trial & Retribution, Mind Games, and The Commander. During this high point in her life, La Plante also published her most famous books (the Cold series).

When it Comes to Writing, What Books Made Lynda Popular?

More than anything else, La Plante’s writing career was generated by famous books Cold Blood,Cold Shoulder and Cold Hard. Otherwise known as the Cold series. These books revolve around private detective Lorraine Page, who used to have everything she could have ever wanted, but soon found herself left out on the street with no one and nothing. Her former co-workers ignore her, her boss doesn’t bat an eyelash…until a serial killer strikes back and the force is stuck trying to find a missing witness.

Lorraine Page is left to figure out if she wants to come forward with the fact that she, herself, witnessed the attempted murder of the victim who escaped. The second book, once again following the Lorraine Page plot-line, is all about Page’s new place on the force and her first stab at finding a serial killer on her own. The issue is that, in this instance, there is a huge prize is she should win, and a huge price if she should fail.

She must decide if she will risk her life to bring the killer to justice simply to claim the reward, or if she should leave the task to someone more experience, more willing, and more trusting than she will ever be able to trust herself after her difficult and harrowing past.

The series reaches closer to its ending when movie mogul Harry Nathan dies in a Beverly Hills swimming pool and Lorraine Page is once again forced into her toughest case as she tries to make up for the damage done to Cindy Nathan’s life (Harry’s third wife). The worst part of all is when Page discovers that her colleagues have already determined Cindy is the killer, and have charged her with the act.

Now, it is up to Page to prove that her instincts haven’t failed her, and that there is more to this case than meets the eye. Another famous piece by La Plante is Sleeping Cruelty, the story about a rich entrepreneur who just wants to feel like he belongs among the elite.

But, when he finally gets what he’s yearned for all these years, a political scandal erupts around him and he is shunned into the shadows once again with no shred of a positive reputation left. Sir William Benedict is left with no choice but to exact revenge on those who have sabotaged his dreams…and Justin Chalmers and his sister Laura are about to discover just how dark revenge can be when exacted by a man who has nothing left.

What Kind of Awards has La Plante Earned?

Lynda has received a huge amount of awards over her time in the field, including becoming an honorary-member of both the Liverpool John Moores University and British Film Institute. She was also awarded with the Dennis-Potter Writers-Award from the British-Academy of Film and Television Arts, and she received the Edgar-Allan Poe Writer’s Award (not to mention an Emmy) for her mini-series Prime Suspect.

La Plante was welcomed into the Crime-Thriller-Awards Hall-of-Fame in 2009, and later given an Honorary-Fellowship with the Forensic-Science-Society because of the amount of accuracy that she uses in portraying forensic-science in her work. Lynda was the first ever non-scientist to be welcomed into the Forensic-Science-Society. She was also made Commander of the Order of the British-Empire, and was given the TV-Spiel-film-Award for the television version of Above Suspicion, one of her more popular novels.

What’s Next for La Plante? While Lynda has completed and released several novels in the past years (Blind Fury, Deadly Intent, Blood Line, Silent Scream, Backlash and her newest release, Wrongful Death), she still has much more planned for those who enjoy her writing. Lynda has announced on her website that she will be releasing a standalone thriller in 2014, titled Driven to the Brink.

The story will revolve around the disturbing disappearance of a schoolgirl and the race to discover where she is hidden. It will be published by Simon and Schuster in the UK, and will come out in June. With a well-publicized career and many awards to boot, it is obvious that Lynda La Plante is a force to be reckoned with, and may just find her way onto our televisions in one way or another over the next few years. Age doesn’t mean anything when faced with a women this driven in her career, and this dedicated to the heart of her craft.

I have lived in China for the past 2O years,so getting English novels is not easy, although found odd ones on the internet here. So,my sister posts some to me,probably buys in Waterstones. Last year she sent a couple of your books, this year a couple more, including WIDOWS REVENGE,but this is the second one in the series,so cannot read it yet I am now hooked on them, have you any idea where they are available here. I am a 77 year old avid reader with a Chinese wife.I am preparing a new list to send to her, but if you have any idea where they may be available in China, would be great. I live in Suzhou City, about 60 miles inland from Shanghai.

I love every single one of the book she has written. The one I have enjoyed the most is the Anna Travis serious. Will there be anymore or that is it. Would love to see Anna’s progress in the police force and her relationship with the DCI.

I have to say that I’ve become totally addicted to Lynda La Plante’s novels. As a retired police officer myself, I can say that she explores and provides in-depth knowledge of police and forensic procedure to a really high level, and that alone is very impressive considering she was never actually a serving police office herself. Her research is obviously incredibly thorough. I always wait with bated breath, her new novels. Well done, Lynda! You’re certainly one of the finest!!!
