At 10 a.m. Sunday, Iowa reported an additional 4,432cases of COVID-19 and 13 additional COVID-19-related deathssince the state's tally at 10 a.m. Saturday, according to Coronavirus.Iowa.gov.

Officials report a total of 1,972 people with COVID-19 have died from the disease across the state, including 35 in Johnson County. A death reported Saturday was the second in a week and the fourth this month; the first death here was reported April 4.

By contrast, officials reported 103 influenza-related deaths across the entire state in the 2019-20 flu season, and the novel coronavirus will likely be the third-leading cause of death in Iowa in 2020, behind just heart disease and cancer, according to 2017 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data.

A total of 1,100,076 Iowans have been tested for the SARS-CoV-2 novel coronavirus, which causes the disease, including 53,421 in Johnson County. A total of 184,685 have tested positive in Iowa. The state has reported a total of 8,160confirmed COVID-19 cases in Johnson County, an increase of 120 since 10 a.m. Saturday.

How many people are in hospitals?

At 10 a.m. Sunday, the state reported a record 287people with the virus were being hospitalized in the state's fifth RMCC, which includes Clinton, Des Moines, Henry, Iowa, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Keokuk, Lee, Muscatine, Scott, Van Buren, Wapello and Washington counties, as well as a record 75patients in the region's intensive care units. The region last peaked at 280hospitalized patientsand 71in its ICUs on Saturday.

Officials also reported a record 1,279COVID-19 patientshospitalized across the state Sunday morning, including a record 247in ICUs; the previous records were 1,261and 246, reported Saturday.

Gov. Kim Reynolds ordered bars, breweries and nightclubs closed in Johnson and five other counties on Aug. 27, and Johnson County's 14-day positivity rate peaked at nearly 25% in the first week of September. The county's 14-day rate fell to just 4.8% the first week of October and, after Reynolds allowed bars to reopen Oct. 5, the county's 14-day rate has climbed slowly higher, and was 17.1% Sunday morning — the 12th straight day the county's 14-day positivity rate has averaged higher than 10%.

Reynolds, who has long resisted calls from health professionals to issue a statewide mask mandate, issued her first new coronavirus mitigation measures since late August last week, requiring masks at many public gatherings as new coronavirus cases and hospitalizations continue to set records.

The rules differ based on the size and type of gathering and contain exceptions that mean that people at some events, even large ones, may not have to wear a facial covering.

All but four of Iowa's 99 counties were reporting 14-day positivity rate averages of at or higher than 15% Saturday morning. Just one county — Ringgold, in south-central Iowa — was reporting 14-day positivity rate averages lower than 10%.
